Hello, I am trying to play some maps made for quake live in q3a but I have run into the problem stated in the subject. I have found out that a hex editor can be used to rectify the difference in version numbers but I have no idea how. Can someone give me an explanation of this process? (I have never used a hex editor before)

Well, I have used your QuakeLive decoder. Thank you for that. I have decoded the quake live pak file and I used pakscape to create a .pk3 file. The problem arises, as you know, when q3a reports a wrong version number. I have read the thread you posted but I guess I'm confused how I resolve the version number problem with your quakelive decoder.

maybe some bsp editor can do the conversion, the only thing I tried was simply using the QL maps "as is" on Enemy Territory which uses the same version number but there were some problems with some textures and objects. not being one of my fields that's the max I can say.

Theoretically you only need to modify the version number in the bsp, for that open it with a hexeditor , somewhere the first bytes. But q3 might crash due to incompatibility. Yet ET maps work.
